# Google Search Console Opportunity Analyzer

Last updated: Jul 20, 2026

Turn a Search Console CSV into prioritized SEO opportunities—without connecting an account, uploading private query data, or relying on a generic CTR benchmark.

Private first-party analysis

## How to Turn a GSC Export into an Action List

1. **Export a focused dataset.** In Search Console, set the search type, country/device/page filters, and date range before exporting the Queries or Pages table. Preserve those choices for the comparison period.
2. **Add a previous period when needed.** Use equal-length, non-overlapping periods for decay and won/lost analysis. A 28-day current period compared with a 28-day previous period is more interpretable than mismatched ranges.
3. **Describe your brand.** Optional brand terms let the analyzer split branded and non-branded performance and prevent navigational queries from distorting opportunity reviews.
4. **Review the prioritization, not only the score.** Start with rows that combine meaningful impressions, a reachable position or CTR gap, and clear business value. The click estimates are arithmetic scenarios, not forecasts.
5. **Inspect the live search result.** Confirm intent, competing result types, current title/snippet, content quality, internal links, and whether another page genuinely owns the query before making a change.
6. **Export the active report.** Download the filtered results, assign an owner and action, then compare again after enough impressions accumulate.

Better than generic benchmarks

## What Each GSC Opportunity Report Actually Tells You

### Striking distance: where a feasible improvement may matter

Rows around positions 4–20 already have relevance and impressions. The analyzer estimates the clicks associated with your chosen target position using your property’s own curve. Prioritize queries aligned with a valuable page and a realistic content, authority, or internal-link improvement—not every keyword near page one.

### CTR gaps: where presentation or intent deserves inspection

A below-curve CTR can point to a weak title, vague description, wrong page, or mismatch with intent. It can also be entirely reasonable when ads, local packs, images, featured answers, or strong brands occupy the result. The report surfaces questions; it does not diagnose the SERP automatically.

### Content decay and won/lost: where performance changed

Click and impression deltas help distinguish lost visibility from lower demand. Falling impressions with stable position can be seasonal; falling position and clicks can justify a content, intent, link, or technical review. New and disappeared rows should be checked against GSC’s row limits before being treated as truly new or lost.

### Cannibalization: where multiple pages share a query

A combined query-and-page export can show whether impressions concentrate on one page or fragment across several. Fragmentation is a review cue, not proof of harm. Separate Search Console query and page exports cannot reconstruct this relationship and are intentionally rejected for this report.

Transparent methodology

## How Opportunity Clicks Are Estimated

For every position bucket, observed CTR equals total clicks divided by total impressions. The tool applies impression-weighted monotonic smoothing to those bucket values, creating an expected curve that cannot improve as average position gets worse.

Estimated additional clicks = max(0, impressions × expected CTR − current clicks)

For a CTR gap, expected CTR comes from the row’s current position bucket. For striking distance, it comes from the chosen target-position bucket. The calculation holds impressions constant and does not estimate higher search visibility, conversion value, seasonality, or future rankings.

Data preparation

## Export Checklist for Reliable Comparisons

- **Same scope:** use the same Web/Image/Video/News search type and the same page, country, device, and appearance filters.
- **Same duration:** compare equal numbers of days and note holidays, launches, promotions, and known outages.
- **Right dimension:** queries answer keyword questions; pages answer URL questions. Use a combined query+page dataset only when each row genuinely contains that relationship.
- **Adequate volume:** raise the minimum-impression filter when tiny samples produce noisy CTR and average-position changes.
- **Complete enough data:** the UI’s 1,000-row export can be sufficient for leading opportunities, but use Google’s free Search Analytics API or bulk export for large properties.
- **Human validation:** inspect the actual page and live results before consolidating pages, rewriting metadata, or changing a successful URL.

## GSC Opportunity Analyzer: FAQ

Does WebAloha upload or store my Search Console CSV?

No. The CSV parser and every calculation run in your browser. The analyzer does not send your files, queries, pages, clicks, or impressions to WebAloha. Refreshing or closing the page clears the imported data.

Which Google Search Console export should I use?

In Search Console, open Performance, choose Search results, set the desired search type, filters, and date range, select the Queries or Pages tab, and export CSV. Use equal-length, comparable recent and previous periods for change analysis. A query-and-page file from the API or another trusted export workflow unlocks cannibalization review.

Why does my Search Console CSV have only 1,000 rows?

The Search Console interface exports up to 1,000 representative table rows. Anonymous queries are omitted for privacy, and filtered totals can differ because of truncation. This tool analyzes exactly what is present in your files; it cannot recover omitted rows. Use the free Search Analytics API or bulk export when you need a more complete dataset.

Can I combine the normal Queries.csv and Pages.csv files to find cannibalization?

No. Those separate exports contain independent totals and do not preserve which query produced impressions for which page. Joining them would invent relationships. Cannibalization mode is available only when one dataset contains both query and page columns on each row, such as a query-plus-page Search Analytics API export.

How does the analyzer find striking-distance opportunities?

It filters rows by your chosen position and impression ranges, estimates a target CTR from your own site’s position-bucket curve, and prioritizes the rows with the largest conservative click gap. Ranking gains are not predicted, and the estimate assumes impressions remain unchanged.

How is the expected CTR curve calculated?

The tool aggregates your imported clicks and impressions into position buckets, calculates observed CTR, then applies impression-weighted monotonic smoothing so expected CTR does not increase as positions get worse. This is a diagnostic baseline built from your data, not an industry benchmark or a promised CTR.

What is a CTR opportunity?

It is a query or page whose actual CTR is below the expected CTR for its average-position bucket. Search features, brand familiarity, device mix, location, intent, and title relevance can all explain the gap, so inspect the live result before changing a title or description.

What is the difference between content decay and won/lost analysis?

Content decay focuses on rows that lost clicks or impressions between two comparable periods. Won/lost includes improving, declining, new, and disappeared rows. Seasonality, promotions, migrations, tracking changes, and different date-range lengths can distort either report.

Does a cannibalization candidate always need to be consolidated?

No. Multiple pages can appear for a query for valid reasons, including sitelinks, different intents, localization, or a deliberate page transition. The report shows page distribution and dominance so you can inspect intent, canonicals, internal links, and result history before deciding.

What does average position mean in Search Console?

It is the average position of your property’s topmost result for the measured impressions, not a fixed rank for every user. Search type, country, device, personalization, and result features affect the number. Use it as a trend and prioritization signal rather than an exact rank.
