 ![WordPress 7.0 PHP Requirements and Compatibility](https://webaloha.co/_astro/blog-wordpress-7-php-compatibility.CBfU1DdD_ZQFmNa.webp?dpl=dpl_H1MtSCmk524EGpEs7Etp4HWKr3Ti)

WordPress 7.0 raised the minimum PHP version to 7.4 and supports current PHP 8 branches through PHP 8.5. The minimum keeps older sites eligible for WordPress updates; it is not the recommended production target.

## Official matrix

The [WordPress Core compatibility reference](https://make.wordpress.org/core/handbook/references/php-compatibility-and-wordpress-versions/) lists WordPress 7.0 as compatible with:

| PHP branch | WordPress 7.0 |
| --- | --- |
| PHP 8.5 | Supported |
| PHP 8.4 | Supported |
| PHP 8.3 | Supported |
| PHP 8.2 | Supported |
| PHP 8.1 | Supported |
| PHP 8.0 | Supported |
| PHP 7.4 | Supported minimum |
| PHP 7.3 and below | Not supported |

WordPress.org’s [requirements page](https://wordpress.org/about/requirements/) recommends PHP 8.3 or greater. That distinction between “minimum” and “recommended” is the important operational message.

## What WordPress 7 support covers

The matrix covers WordPress Core. A real site still needs separate verification for:

-   theme and child theme;
-   plugins and must-use plugins;
-   page builders and add-ons;
-   WooCommerce extensions and payment or shipping integrations;
-   custom functions, APIs, webhooks, jobs, and imports;
- PHP extensions and hosting configuration.

Do not use a list of unrelated client domains as proof. A reproducible compatibility claim needs version inventory, test cases, dates, and logs.

## Upgrade order

1. Inventory the full stack and remove abandoned components where practical.
2.  Create a production-like staging copy.
3. Update WordPress 7, themes, and maintained plugins.
4. Back up and verify both WordPress and PHP rollback.
5. Test the target PHP branch on staging.
6. Exercise public, admin, form, commerce, email, API, and scheduled flows.
7. Review logs for fatals, warnings, and deprecations.
8. Deploy in a monitored window and repeat critical checks.

## Which PHP branch should WordPress 7 use?

The evergreen answer is in the [recommended PHP version guide](https://webaloha.co/recommended-php-version-for-wordpress/): select a currently supported branch that the complete site proves ready for.

- [PHP 8.5](https://webaloha.co/wordpress-php-8-5-compatibility/) has the newest WordPress-supported branch in this matrix but may expose lagging third-party code.
- [PHP 8.4](https://webaloha.co/wordpress-compatibility-with-php-8-4/) is also supported and can be a temporary alternative for a stack blocked on 8.5.
- PHP 8.3 meets WordPress.org’s current recommendation and may be the temporary baseline when newer branches fail a documented dependency.

The conclusion is not “WordPress 7 makes every plugin safe on PHP 8.5.” It is that WordPress 7 Core supports PHP 7.4 through 8.5, while production readiness remains a full-stack test.

## Frequently asked questions

What PHP version does WordPress 7.0 require?

WordPress 7.0 requires PHP 7.4 or greater. WordPress.org recommends PHP 8.3 or greater for a modern production baseline.

Does WordPress 7.0 support PHP 8.5?

Yes. The WordPress Core compatibility matrix lists WordPress 7.0 as supporting PHP 8.0 through PHP 8.5 as well as PHP 7.4.

Will every WordPress 7 plugin work on PHP 8.5?

Not necessarily. Core support does not certify themes, plugins, WooCommerce extensions, or custom code. Test the complete stack on staging and review logs.

Should a WordPress 7 site remain on PHP 7.4?

PHP 7.4 is the compatibility minimum, not the modern security recommendation. Plan a staged move to a currently supported PHP branch and replace components that block it.
