About Wat Pa Tam Wua
Wat Pa Tam Wua is a Buddhist forest monastery in Thailand. As an open meditation retreat center, it offers visitors teachings, guided meditation practice, accommodation, and two meals a day, all free of charge.
The monastery welcomes people from all countries and backgrounds. It is a place where anyone can practice mindfulness while being cared for in a calm and supportive environment. Its peaceful setting and idyllic atmosphere make it well suited to both first-time retreat visitors and more experienced practitioners.
Wat Pa Tam Wua is a nonprofit organization which operates entirely on donations and volunteer support.
The Story Behind the Project
I'm Oleg, the founder of Web Aloha.
In 2019, while backpacking through Thailand, I was looking for a meditation retreat together with a close friend. It was our first time, and after coming across a good story about Wat Pa Tam Wua, we decided to give it a try.
The monastery's old website was outdated, full of errors, and barely gave us any useful information. And the whole "come and stay for free" part sounded too good to be true. Nevertheless, we made it there.
Long story short, my experience at Wat Pa Tam Wua was unforgettable. The environment was calm, supportive, and surprisingly generous. I was amazed. They offered guidance, accommodation, and meals completely free of charge.
I spent 20 amazing days there, practicing mindfulness and learning. Fun fact: this story was later featured in a Lithuanian newspaper, which interviewed me about my 20-day experience at a Buddhist monastery.
As a gesture of appreciation for the monastery, I offered them Web Aloha's web design services free of charge. I saw a great opportunity to contribute to their mission and make things easier for both the monastery staff and its visitors.
I've returned to Wat Pa Tam Wua several times since and have continued supporting them for the past 8 years. Thanks for reading, and let's move on to the actual case study. 💪
The Problem
The monastery's website was terrible. Some pages returned 404 errors, while others had broken layouts or cut-off text. It could barely answer the questions potential visitors actually had.
And there were many questions. The monastery is a three-hour drive from the nearest town, so practical information mattered: how to get there, what to prepare, whether a stay had to be booked in advance, and what to expect on arrival.
Once I arrived, it became clear that the lack of a proper website was creating extra work for the staff as well. They had to answer the same questions repeatedly, explain directions, and help visitors understand how to prepare. That wasted time for both the staff and the people planning to come.
There was also no Thai version of the website. Despite being located in Thailand, locals could not access key information unless they contacted the monastery directly. Which again, wasted everyone's time.
As a professional website designer, I instantly saw the opportunity to make things better. And that's what we did.
Web Aloha Approach
Developing a Website
Web Aloha designed and gifted a new website for Wat Pa Tam Wua. It had a clear structure, included SEO optimizations, and provided the information visitors actually needed.
The primary goal of a website design was to clearly explained the essentials: what Wat Pa Tam Wua is, how to get there, the daily schedule, monastery rules, and other things to know before arriving.
It answered most common questions and saved significant time for monastery staff, who previously had to repeat the same explanations every day.
Over time, the website also became a major source of visibility. Today, it attracts 82,000+ annual visitors and helps thousands of people on their journey toward mindfulness and self-development.
A stronger online presence also supported the monastery's growth, bringing more attention, greater recognition, and more support from various organizations.

Further Improvements
The project did not stop after launch.
Over the years, we continued improving the website together with the monastery staff and the monks themselves.
As the audience grew, we expanded the website further. Thai and Chinese versions were added to serve more visitors. And in early 2026, we also launched a Russian version in response to clear demand.
We also added new pages over time to answer more questions and further improve the website for everyone.
Web Aloha's SEO services helped the website gain solid ranks on Google search. In fact, most of the 82,000+ yearly visitors are coming from organic search:
Today, the website attracts over 82,000 visitors a year, with no ads.
Over 52,000 organic clicks from Google per year.
Web Aloha Continues Supporting the Project
For the past 8 years, Web Aloha has continued supporting the website. We handle all website maintenance, technical updates, and adjustments as needs come up.
Recently, we ran a full Generative Engine Optimization (GEO) service on the website to help it earn more AI citations.
Throughout these years, we have also provided complimentary website hosting.
As of 2026, we still support the project and continue helping Wat Pa Tam Wua monastery with their wonderful mission.
