Which PHP version should my WordPress site run?
For most sites in 2026, PHP 8.3 is the minimum we recommend and newer stable versions are preferred once your theme and plugins support them. Our recommended PHP version guide is updated with every release. The free PHP Version Checker may find a public clue; confirm the actual runtime in WordPress Site Health or your hosting panel.
When does PHP 8.2 reach end of life?
PHP 8.2 receives security fixes only until 31 December 2026, according to php.net. After that date the PHP project publishes no more fixes for it. WordPress keeps running on PHP 8.2, but plan the move to PHP 8.3, 8.4, or 8.5 now and test it on a staging copy first. Our PHP 8.2 end-of-life guide has the full upgrade and rollback plan.
How do I update PHP without breaking my site?
Back up first, copy the site to staging, check theme, plugin, and custom-code compatibility, test forms, checkout, logins, and scheduled jobs on the new version, and keep a rollback ready before you switch the live site. Is WordPress still a good choice in 2026?
Yes. WordPress remains a widely used option for content-heavy sites with frequent edits when it is kept fast and updated. For some businesses, especially those with mostly static content, migrating to a static stack like Astro brings speed and security advantages. When does migrating from WordPress to Astro make sense?
